Islam vs. Civilization

The greatest conflict of the past century has not been between Communism and Democracy.  It has not been between Liberalism and Conservatism. It has not been between Socialism and Capitalism.  It has not been between Rich and Poor, Proletariat and Bourgeoisie, Industrialism and Agrarianism, Nationalism and Colonialism, Management and Labor, First World and Third World, East and West, North and South, Allied and Axis, or NATO and Soviet.  All of these conflicts have been important, of course.  All of them helped to define the modern era significantly. None of them should be in any way underestimated.

But while every one of these conflicts has pitted ardent foes against one another and as a result, has actually altered the course and character of recent history, none of them could be characterized as the most convulsive conflict of the past century.

King of Fools passes on this report from the Egyptian press that theorizes that the tsunami was caused by, you guessed it, Americans and Israelis cooperating with the Indian government in a nuclear weapons test.

God Does Not Believe In Atheists

David Limbaugh posted on Michael Newdow's latest antics. Newdow is the guy who sued to have his  daughter (who does not live with him and says she is a Christian), protected from the words, "under God," in her public school. Not only has he refiled his unsuccessful suit against the pledge, but he is also filing suit to ban prayer at the upcoming presidential inauguration. He's offended he says, and feels like a second-class citizen. His life seems to revolve around fighting against the God he says he does not believe in.

I was surfing blogs recently and read an atheist's rants, claiming he cared no more about what God thought of him than he did Santa Claus, because he believed no more in one than he did the other. (It is an argument that is often made.) Oh really? Where is his rant against Santa? Where are the lawsuits to ban Santa from public schools and courthouses?  Are there atheists railing on about the Easter Bunny? The Tooth Fairy? Black helicopters? Surely somewhere, in some public school some teacher has mentioned one or all of these.

It doesn't take a whole lot of insight into human nature to see that those who rail against God, and yet claim to not care about Him are being at least a little bit coy. As William Shakespeare said, "Methinks ye protest too much."
